Pols Pimp Their Pride Rides

Much can be learned about local politicians based on their choice of transport this weekend

In politics, appearances count. Especially at San Francisco's annual Pride Parade, which puts the city on the world stage.

San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty, who represents Harvey Milk's old district that includes the Castro, will be ferried along the Pride Parade route on a scale replica of the Castro Theater.

At the risk of indulging in stereotypes, it promises to be fabulous.

Mayor Gavin Newsom will be riding in a convertible behind his official limousine, the better to bedazzle the crowd with his gel-coiffed hair (and the better for the crowd to make snide remarks about wife Jennifer Siebel-Newsom's outfit, whatever it may be).

A coterie of hand-picked supporters will trail behind like exhaust from a high-powered political machine.

Public Defender Jeff Adachi? Dump Truck. City Assessor Phil Ting? Donated rental convertible. Supervisor Eric Mar? A seven-seat bicycle.

No word, however, on choices of outfits, leaving the prospect of Ross Mirkarimi rollerskating in hot pants up to the imagination for now.

Jackson West will be out of town, but can't wait to see the photos on Flickr.
