Pregnant Dog Abandoned at Newark Park Gives Birth to Puppies

An animal abuse investigation is under way in Newark after someone tied a pregnant German shepherd to a park bench while she was giving birth. Not all of her puppies survived.

A police officer found the pregnant dog was tied to a bench in Lakeshore Park in Newark. She had already given birth to one pup that didn’t make it.

Police received several calls about the struggling dog. The officer located the dog and drove her to Central Veterinary in Fremont.

Workers at the clinic called the pregnant dog “Bristol.” The German shepherd is thought to be only about nine months old.

On the way to Central Veterinary, Bristol had another pup that died, but after several hours at the hospital she gave birth to seven “nice and healthy” pups.

“She’s a wonderful mom,” said Central Veterinary Hospital manager Elizabeth Jardine-Pereira. “If we just disturb one of the puppies, she’s up and checking everywhere. She’s done an amazing job.”

Bristol and the surviving pups are said to be doing well.

Hospital staff is now trying to find a foster parent for Bristol and her seven pups, and already calls are pouring in.

The dog had no microchip or tags. So far, the owner of the dog has not come forward.
