Public Viewing, Funeral for Slain Hayward Police Sgt. Scott Lunger

A public viewing will be held on Wednesday for a Hayward police officer, shot down during a routine traffic stop last week.

The viewing for Sgt. Scott Lunger will take place at Chapel of Chimes in Hayward from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thousands are expected to pay their respects to the fallen officer who was shot one week ago.

Then, on Thursday, a memorial service will take place at 10 a.m. at the Oracle Arena in Oakland. The memorial service is also open to the public.

Mark Estrada, 21, of Oakland is being held without bail after police say was the one who shot Lunger as he approached the driver’s side of a stopped vehicle, near Myrtle and Lion streets in Hayward. The vehicle had reportedly been swerving  and almost hit parked cars.

Lunger served for 15 years with Hayward PD as a member of the SWAT team and the Gang Unit. Estrada is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 25 and possible enter a plea.
