A litter of terrier puppies left for trash in January at a Pleasant Hill park are now up for adoption. After weeks of recovery with a foster family, the three male puppies are in good health and ready for a brighter future.
East Bay Animal Refuge and Rescue is screening applicants to take home two of those three pups. Flaco and Katai are up for adoption, and the family-oriented, indoor pooches weigh 3 to 5 pounds.
Due to high interest in these puppies over the last few weeks, EBARR is encouraging people who might want to take home these pets to fill out an application online. The puppies are slated to be spayed and neutered Thursday.
On Jan. 19, a dog walker found these three 5-week-old male terrier puppies sealed in a garbage bag near a trash can at Paso Nogal Park in Pleasant Hill. Although animal services officials have canvassed neighbors, they are concerned because no one has come forward with information about how these three puppies were abandoned.
“The bad part is, that there’s somebody who’s still out there who did something horrible that could have killed these dogs,” said Lt. Joe DeCosta of Martinez Animal Services Shelter.

Local animal services are still investigating the case, but they have no active leads. The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in this case.
