San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva had to be pulled out of the water while swimming in Lake Tahoe and is in critical condition at a Reno hospital, the club announced Tuesday.
Silva, who is currently on loan with the Earthquakes’ United Soccer League affiliate Reno 1868 FC, received life-saving resuscitation measures at the scene. He was then transferred to a nearby hospital in Lake Tahoe before being airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.
He is currently in critical condition.
A native of Taboao Da Serra, Brazil, Silva was claimed off of waivers by San Jose in July 2015.
For his career, he's played in four games with the big club, staring twice in 2016. Reno 1868 is fresh off a recording-breaking 9-0 win on Monday against LA Galaxy II.
Silva has logged just 166 minutes for the Reno 1868 club after spending the majority of his time with Arizona United SC in 2016, appearing in nine games and logging 606 minutes.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Matheus and his family and friends," the Earthquakes said in a news release.
