Rent May Double for Owners Of Pacifica Mobile Homes

Mobile home park owners say $1,100 increases necessary to pay for fixes.

The sky's the limit at Pacific Skies Estates mobile home park -- at least when it comes to the rent.

Several homeowners told NBC Bay Area they got a letter last month from the company that owns the land telling them their rent fees may double by next year.

There are 93 homes at the park -- 15 of which are owned by individuals, and not rented by the park. It's those homes that could see a rent increase of $1,119.58 per month -- on top of the nearly $1,300 some homes pay, according to the Pacifica Tribune.

The mobile home tenants own their trailers but rent the space from the park -- and say they can't afford such a steep rent increase.

β€œMy rent would go up to $2,400, and we would have to leave our home,” homeowner Donald Pray said. β€œThey would get it for nothing.”

Pacific Skies needs to raise rents in order to pay for $1.5 million in improvements, such as new gas and sewer lines.

β€œRent increases are necessary in the marketplace to allow for the improvements that we have made to protect the park and its residents,” said Pacific Skies Estates representative
Carol McDermott.

The rent increase isn't set in stone: The mobile homes have rent control, thanks to a 1991 law. The park's owners need to convince officers at a hearing that the rent increase is justified.

A hearing on this proposal won't take place until early next year.
