High-Speed Rail Would Impact Airports: Report

A new study estimates California's proposed high-speed rail system would reduce projected passenger traffic at Bay Area airports.

The report released this week found that the trains would reduce the number of travelers at San Francisco, Norman Mineta San Jose and Oakland International airports by a little more than 6 percent.

The $42.6 billion system is scheduled to begin running in 2020 and is expected to cost less than comparable air travel.

The report commissioned by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission said high-speed trains would reduce the airports' passenger load by 6 million people by 2035.

Passengers heading to the cities in Southern California the rail line is expected to serve would account for most of the lost traffic.
