Woman Holds Gun to Her Head at Mass: Witness

Local resident says parishoners "scrambled" as woman approached altar with a gun.

Police in Milpitas surrounded St. Elizabeth's Church in an apparent standoff allegedly involving a woman with a gun Saturday night.

Neighbors who live near the church on Sequoia Avenue called NBC Bay Area to say police cordoned off the area around the church at around 8:30 p.m.

Local resident Neal Osborn said he was told that an "obviously agitated woman went to the altar, and at that point she pulled out a gun and held it to her head. Then, parishoners scrambled."

It is unclear if the woman attended the church service.

The San Jose Police Department told NBC Bay Area that they sent their helicopter to the scene, but could not comment further.

Authorities were able to talk the woman down before the woman hurt herself or anyone else in the church, NBC Bay Area reported.
