1 Dead in Kayaking Accident Off Dillon Beach in Marin County: Sheriffs

The Marin County Sheriff's Office confirms one person died Wednesday in a kayaking accident north of Tomales Bay.

The Sonoma County man was kayaking with a friend near NIck's Cove, north of Point Reyes, when the accident occurred, officials said.

The kayaker was identified late Wednesday as 55-year-old Nicholas Anast, a popular professor at Santa Rosa Junior College, according to the sheriff's office.

Crews earlier in the evening worked to rescue the two kayakers who reportedly grounded on the rocks near Dillon Beach.

The U.S. Coast Guard and a CHP helicopter also assisted in the rescue efforts.

Officials said the kayakers began kayaking near Nicks Cove earlier in the day and headed toward Dillon Beach.

Both kayakers were said to be wearing life vests, but Anast was not wearing one when he was found by rescue personnel, officials said.
