Resident at Clinic for Strep Throat When Fire Broke Out

A fire broke out Wednesday morning at a home in downtown San Jose, but no one was home because the homeowner was being seen a clinic for strep throat, officials said.

San Jose Fire Capt. Fernando Munoz said firefighters raced to a home in the 500 block of N. 8th Street at 3:35 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire. Neither the homeowner or two roommates were there. They had left the home about midnight to receive medical attention, Munoz said.

Firefighters had to cut a hole through the roof to put out the flames. Most of the damage was in the basement, Munoz said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
