Residents Return Home Following Richmond Gas Leak Evacuations

PG&E has capped a broken gas line that triggered evacuations in Richmond and is working this afternoon to make repairs, according to a utility spokesman.

A construction crew that was drilling or boring in the area of Marina Bay Parkway at Jetty Drive and Pierson Avenue struck the 3-inch natural gas line around 9:45 a.m., according to Richmond fire officials.

Residents at the Anchorage at Marina Bay apartment complex were evacuated and others living downwind from the area were asked to shelter-in-place while PG&E worked to cap the line.

The line was capped around 11:30 a.m., PG&E spokesman Joe Molica said.

There is no estimated time for when the line will be fully repaired, Molica said.

"We will be billing this contractor for digging into our lines," he said. "These kinds of third-party dig-ins are all too common.

"It is their responsibility to get in touch with us," Molica said.
