A California Highway Patrol officer didn't know he was dealing with a suicidal driver when he pulled over a man this morning in Concord.
The CHP said a routine stop of a suspected impaired driver along Highway 4 near Port Chicago Highway turned into a fatality in an instant.
The stop happened at 9:20 a.m. The CHP said after the officer approached the car, the driver displayed a handgun and shot himself.
The CHP said the incident is being investigated as an officer involved fatal incident because the man was interacting with police when he died.
A stretch of Port Chicago Highway and a portion of Highway 4 were shut down for hours Thursday while evidence was collected.
The driver has not been identified. He was taken to John Muir Hospital where he pronounced dead.
