If you picked up a USA Today this week you might have noticed that a well-loved ice cream shop in the Mission made it on a top ten least of "must try" scoops for the 2012 summer.
Food writer Ellen Brown noted that the country is in the middle of an ice cream revolution.
"As Americans have learned to appreciate the true craft of food, they're now looking for it in ice cream as well," Brown told the paper.
On her list of spots she recommends people try to taste this summer is San Franciso's own Mitchell's.
Mitchell's has been around since the 1960s and is known for its tropical fruit flavors. (They also have the standards for the ice cream purists.)
It's located at 688 San Jose Avenue. If you are in the city this holiday weekend or anytime this summer, stop on by and tell them USA Today sent you.
Here's a list of the tropical flavors that make Mitchell's so popular:
- Buko (Baby Coconut)
- Coconut Pineapple
- *Ginger (November through February)
- Green Tea
- Halo Halo (Buko, Langka, Ube, Pineapple, Mongo & Sweet Beans)
- Langka (also known as Jackfruit, a relative of the Fig)
- Macapuno (Sweet Coconut)
- Tropical Four (Banana, Guava, Mango & Pineapple)
- Ube (Purple Yam)
