SF May Offer Free Bus Rides For Seniors And Disabled

Free Muni rides for the elderly and disabled likely to be approved Jan. 20.

All aboard the bus — no fare needed.

San Francisco's Muni may add free rides for seniors and the disabled to its offerings of free bus rides for youth, according to KQED.

The radio station notes that 24,000 seniors and people with disabilities ride the buses and trains in San Francisco at a discounted rate.

But last year, youths began riding the buses for free. Extending that generosity to seniors at that time was rejected, but could become real Jan. 20, officials told the radio station.

It could cost as much as $8 million to extend the free Muni rides to seniors and disabled people.

One reason for the change is San Francisco's cost of living, which only continues to soar. Paying for transit might be too much for some people living off of Social Security or disability checks, advocates say.
