The San Francisco Police Commission will convene a special meeting  next week to discuss plans to replace Police Chief Heather Fong, who  announced Saturday that she plans to retire in April.

San Francisco police Chief Heather Fong announced in an interview with Mayor Gavin Newsom Saturday her plan to retire after serving 32 years with the department.

Fong, the first woman to serve as chief of police in San Francisco, worked as an inspector, lieutenant, captain, commander, deputy chief and assistant chief at the Police Department before being appointed acting chief in January 2004.

She was then named police chief in April 2004, according to Newsom.

"It's been a great opportunity; it's been hard work," Fong said during today's interview on The Gavin Newsom Radio Show. "I am very confident that great things have happened."

She also noted the difficulties of being chief, saying, "It's been a challenging four years."
