The coveted Michelin stars – also known as the holy grail of fine dining – are out for 2017, and the San Francisco Bay Area now has as many three-star restaurants as New York.
Six Bay Area restaurants received three stars. In all, 54 restaurants throughout the Bay Area and wine country received a Michelin star rating.
In this edition, Quince, run by Lindsay and Michael Tusk, gets elevated from two to three stars, joining Benu and Saison in San Francisco.
“We have closely watched Chef Michael Tusk for several years now. In his cuisine, every dish, even the simplest, is exceptional," said Michael Ellis, international director of the Michelin Guide. "It is his fine, precise techniques, that now makes Quince a unique experience for the customer: an experience that is worth the trip."
David Barzelay’s Lazy Bear got awarded a new two-star, joining similarly-ranked restaurants Acquerello, Atelier Crenn, Campton Place and Coi, as well as Oakland’s Commis and Palo Alto’s Baum.
San Jose got its first Michelin star restaurant – Portuguese restaurant Adega. First time stars also went to SoMa’s Hashiri, Civic Center’s ju-ni, Nob Hill’s Mister Jiu’s and Civic Center’s Mosu. Menlo Park’s Madera and Civic Center's The Progress also made the first-timer list.
The 2017 edition of the Michelin Guide San Francisco Bay Area and Wine Country goes on sale Wednesday.
