San Francisco Police Accused of Brutality Following Bicyclist Arrest

San Francisco police are being accused of brutality after cell phone video of police making several arrests at a public housing complex.

The video was posted on YouTube and sparked a protest at the Mission substation Tuesday night.

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said the incident started as a simple infraction of riding a bike on the sidewalk and then all of a sudden it became a "tremendously resistive situation."

The person on the bike is 20-year-old D’Paris Charles Williams.

Williams was detained last Friday when members of the city’s violence reduction team ordered him to stop riding his bicycle on the sidewalk in the Valencia Gardens Housing Complex.

“From what I see in the video, the officers are also being punched at. Our rule is they can use whatever force reasonable to overcome the resistance,” Suhr said.

Police arrested four people, including one man who came up bloody after being taken down.

Five officers were injured; two went to the hospital.

The chief says the incident is under investigation.
