San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed is heading to the East Coast, where he has been invited to speak at two events on the topic of pension reform.
Reed will be in New York on Thursday to deliver a keynote speech about his efforts to reform public employee pensions in his city, and will then join a panel discussion Friday in Washington, D.C., a spokeswoman said.
The mayor's talk on Thursday, titled "Turning the Tables on California: How San Jose is Fighting for Pension Reform," will be at a national conference sponsored by the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research and the news blog Real Clear Politics, Reed spokeswoman Michelle McGurk said.
The conference, called "Save Our Cities-Reforming Public Pensions to Protect Public Services," will be held at the Roosevelt Hotel on East 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan.
Remarks made at the conference by Reed and other speakers, including former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and ex-Michigan Gov. John Engler, will be streamed live on the institute's website, McGurk said.
According to the website, speakers at the event "will offer clear-eyed analyses of the problem and provide concrete prescriptions for reform of public employee pension systems across America."
On Friday, Reed will be in Washington to join a panel at an event sponsored by the research group Pew Charitable Trusts called "Sustainable State and Local Retirement Systems: Responsible Stewardship of Public Funds & Fairness for Employees," according to McGurk.

Reed will be on a panel titled "Pensions for Police and Firefighters," starting at 10:30 a.m. EDT, according to Pew Charitable Trusts spokesman Brian Keegan.
Reed will also be visiting with family members who live in the Washington, D.C., area, McGurk said.
