SJ Theater Bomb Scare During ‘Dark Knight'

Police determined suspicious box was not a bomb.

Several theaters at a San Jose AMC were evacuated Monday night after an unknown male opened a door, shouted an expletive and threw a box into one of the theaters, during a showing of "The Dark Knight Rises."

San Jose police received a 9-1-1 call at about 11:55 p.m. from the AMC located inside the Eastridge Mall, reporting a suspicious package.

Upon arrival, police helped evacuate the remaining people and talked to witnesses.

One of the officers took a photo of  the suspicious box. Theater employees were able to identify the box as the same kind of box used to package plastic trash bags at the theater.

In light of the recent events in Aurora, CO, the on -duty watch commander called in the SJPD bomb squad, confirming the box was safe and the incident was nothing more than a hoax.

One witness told the Mercury News the package was tossed into the center aisle and people in each row directly in front of where the box landed, all stood motionless.

"We were like deer in headlights," he said, "We all stood and stared at it."

No suspect was identified, but the investigation is on-going.
