“It Is a Complete Officer Safety Issue”: SJPD Officer Raises Concerns Over Patrol Computer Problems

It appears the officers responding to calls that one of their own had been shot were not only facing every cops' biggest fear, but also problems with the technology they needed to get to the scene.

Several officers saw the computers they use to navigate freeze while they were responding.

San Jose Police Officer Chris Proft heard the call of the shooting come over the radio.

"The dispatch put out that there were shots fired and an officer was down," Proft said.

He immediately tried to pull up the call on his computer -- and then the unthinkable happened.

"Nothing, absolutely nothing," Proft said. "Blank screen."

Proft said the same problem has occurred before during emergencies, which prompted him to fire off several memos months ago. One of the memos included one sent to the city manager, warning city leaders of the community safety issue.

"You know what, enough is enough, Proft said. "I'm tired of this. It is a complete officer safety issue."

Command staff on Friday said the breakdown of the computers was due to a system overload on Tuesday night. Officials said the police department will have a new system in place on all patrol cars by the end of the year.
