The 38-year old man who was shot and killed by San Jose State police was "charging" with a saw at a police officer, according to reports. The officer's partner, who standing behind him, fired the fatal shots.
That's the explanation given by San Jose State University President Mohammed Qayoumi regarding the Feb. 21 fatal encounter, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
Antonio Lopez Guzman, 38, died at an area hospital after he was shot twice in the back near the campus, the newspaper reported. One of the bullets also entered an occupied bedroom of a local sorority house.
Guzman was shot in the back because he was "charging" at Officer Frits van der Hoek, the newspaper reported. He was shot by Sgt. Mike Santos after van der Hoek tried, but failed to subdue Guzman with a Taser, Qayoumi said in a campus-wide email.
Van der Hoek was "backpedaling" as Guzman charged, according to the police account.
Both cops were supposedly wearing cameras, but it's not yet known what is on the tape.
