SPCA Looking for 18 Missing Horses

The SPCA is looking for 18 horses that disappeared from a Monterey property believed to be in financial trouble.

Rescuers on Friday took a horse from the property that was emaciated so severely malnourished, she could barely walk, according to the human society's Dawn-Flood Fenton. They named her "Paris" and have been nursing her back to health. She has improved but her long-term prognosis is unknown.

When rescuers returned to get the remaining herd the next day, they were gone. At least four of the horses are believed to be in the same condition as the one rescued Friday. An investigation determined there was no food or water on the property, the Monterey Herald reports.

There's a $5,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the abandonment or inadequate care of the horses. Here's more about the case from the Monterey SPCA.
