Salinas Man Stole Car During Test Drive: Cops

Police pulled him over two days later for a traffic violation and discovered the car was stolen.

A 31-year-old Salinas man was arrested two days after he allegedly stole a silver Honda Accord he had taken for a test drive, according to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

On Monday, Federico Sanchez answered an ad for a 1993 two-door silver Honda Accord and the owner allowed him to take the car for a test drive, sheriff's Cmdr. Lisa Nash said.

He allegedly took the Accord and never returned it to the owner.

At about 10:35 p.m. Wednesday, deputies stopped the car on Brooks Road at Westridge Parkway near Salinas for a traffic violation and discovered the vehicle was reported stolen.

Sanchez allegedly admitted to taking the car and was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of buying or receiving stolen property and possession of a stolen car.

Two passengers were in the car at the time of the traffic stop but were not involved in the crime, Nash said.
