San Francisco 1964: In the Throes of the Civil Rights Movement

Protesters in the Bay Area, mostly college students, witness prejudice at iconic Bay Area businesses like Mel’s Drive-In and The Sheraton Palace Hotel. They apply pressure, survive setbacks, and force change.

“I was really pretty much focused on trying to do what was the white thing to do to gain political power. What I would do with that I had not thought about,” said former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.
