San Francisco Bicyclists, Police at Odds Over Traffic Enforcement

A battle is brewing between the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and the city’s police department.

One San Francisco police captain says cracking down on cyclists who don't follow traffic laws is among his top priorities.

But bike advocates believe police time and resources are being funneled away from where they belong in the area surrounding SFPD’s Park Police Station.

The coalition is circulating a petition, asking people to denounce what they see as a misguided use of police resources.

Police say their goal is to reduce deaths in traffic collisions by finding cyclists who are violating rules of the road.
