A proposal to allow light projections on the San Francisco City Hall building for special events has drawn concerns about potential advertising conflicts.

Light displays by Obscura Digital were first employed during the Centennial celebration at City Hall on June 19. NBC Bay Area interviewed the local company, which was responsible for recent projections of endangered species on New York's Empire State Building.

“We believe this display option can enhance special events held at City Hall, the Main Library and the Asian Art Museum, thus affording the City’s General Fund a revenue opportunity from event sponsors,” city director of real estate John Updike wrote in a July 27 letter to the Board of Supervisors.

Updike told San Francisco Examiner that the proposal, expected to be discussed by the Board when they return from recess next month, is not a blanket invitation for general advertising on the building, but corporate sponsors of an event could have their names projected on City Hall.

"There will be very tight controls on this," he said.
