San Francisco Not Gay Enough, Says Magazine

A second magazine finds San Francisco low on the list for gayness

San Francisco is only the 11th gayest city in the country, according to a survey by The Advocate.

Who's ahead of us? Minneapolis! Yes, you read that right. Followed by Santa Fe! And Las Vegas, Orlando, and Pittsburgh! Then Vancouver, Atlanta, Washington, Seattle, and St Louis! Sorry about all the exclamation points, but there's just no other way to express it.

Supervisor Scott Wiener, who represents the Castro, is skeptical. "This is pretty much the mothership," he told the Gate.

But maybe this list is correct: Despite having a large overall gay population, San Francisco's gay neighborhood is pretty tiny compared to other cities.'

The Advocate reached their conclusion by considering a variety of factors: gay wedding statistics, openly gay politicians (so Larry Craig doesn't count), lesbian bars, gay churches, and Tegan and Sara performances. Although our city needed a ton of new marriage commissioners back for the gay weddings back in 2008, it seems as though those deputy commissioners no longer count towards our score.

If the lists are correct, or even close, it shows that homosexuals are branching out beyond the enclaves of Provincetown, West Hollywood and the Castro and into the heartland of America.
