San Francisco Zoo “Tickled Pink” With Rookery of Flamingos

These flamingos are not pink -- yet. Which means the San Francisco Zoo is all the more ecstatic about their arrival.

The zoo's flock of Chilean flamingos has had a successful breeding season, with a total of four chicks emerging from eggs at the zoo, zoo officials announced on Wednesday.

Flamingo chicks, when birthed, are "fluffy" and "white." The pink, as it were, will come later.

The first chick began to "pip," or emerge from its egg, on August 30. Three more followed over the course of the last three weeks, according to the zoo.

Zoo officials said that this is evidence that their flamingo flock is "healthy and happy."

Those who wish to visit the zoo to celebrate the occasion and congratulate the new flamingo parents on their brood will receive $1 off admission -- provided they wear pink.
