San Jose Bicyclist, 18, Dies in Accident

18-year-old bicyclist dies in Santa Clara

An 18-year-old San Jose bicyclist who was not wearing a helmet died Tuesday night after a driver in a Toyota Camry struck him in Santa Clara, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Santa Clara County Coroner identified the teen Wednesday as Daniel Arreola.

The 32-year-old Santa Clara driver was not arrested, the CHP said.

The crash occurred about 10:45 p.m. on Monroe Street near San Tomas Expressway. The CHP report states that the driver was nearing a green traffic light and hit the brakes in order to avoid hitting the bicyclist in a crosswalk, but couldn't stop in time.

Arreola was taken to Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
