San Jose Earthquakes Prepare for First Official Game at Avaya Stadium

The finishing touches are being put on at Avaya Stadium -- the San Jose Earthquakes' new home.

The team's first official game will be held on Sunday and crews are preparing for 18,000 fans to pack the new stadium.

"There's a couple of last-minute items we're going to work on tomorrow," said Jed Mettee of the San Jose Earthquakes. "I don't think there's anything major that would affect or impact a fan experience."

A recent pre-season game at the stadium allowed officials to practice for Sunday's event. Officials from that experience learned they could manage the crowd better and lessen driver confusion, which contributed to major back-ups that day.

The team also learned only 10 percent of fans took public transit. In response, there will be better signage on Coleman to give drivers directions on where to park.

In addition, it will be clear no stadium parking is available down Newhall Drive so that game traffic does not interfere with shopper who are headed to the strip mall next door.

VTA has also ramped-up publicity of its special buses from downtown San Jose starting at First Street and Santa Clara. The buses will run every 15 minutes -- two hours before the game and one hour after.

"It ends up being a pretty convenient way to get to the stadium, or any big event because you don't have to worry about parking, and you don't have to worry about driving," VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress said.

The Earthquakes organizations is excited about finally having a permanent home after bouncing between college venues.

"I think it gives everyone a sense of accomplishment," Earthquakes Coach Dominic Kinnear said. "I think the sport is definitely cemented in our sports environment."

Sunday's game is sold out and is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

The team said it will probably learn more about crowd management and make adjustments throughout the season.
