At Least 2 Displaced After 2-Alarm Fire in San Jose Apartment Building

At least two people were displaced Sunday following a two-alarm fire in a San Jose apartment complex, fire officials said.

Fire Captain Rob Brown said firefighters responded to a report of an apartment fire in the 4600 block of Hamilton Avenue at Atherton Avenue at 2:14 p.m.

Brown said two residents in a downstairs apartment were trying to cook French fries in hot oil when the oil caught on fire. The residents tried to douse the flames with a fire extinguisher and a water hose but were not able to contain it.

The fire was heavily involved by the time fire crews got to the apartment and fire officials registered a second alarm at 2:19 p.m., Brown said.

One of the occupants suffered minor burns and was treated on scene, Brown said.

The fire spread to an adjacent downstairs unit and also damaged several upstairs units, Brown said. The residents in those units may also be displaced due to the damage, but not all of them were home, Brown said.

The large apartment building has between 40 to 50 units, roughly half of which were evacuated, Brown said.

Fire crews knocked down the fire around 3 p.m. and Brown said the

Red Cross is assisting the displaced occupants.
