San Jose Garage Fire Spews Chemicals

A garage caught fire Wednesday night in San Jose and firefighters say the weather conditions were dry and hot, which may have fanned the flames.

The blaze broke out just before 11:30 p.m. on Almaden Avenue at Willow Street and jumped to two alarms quickly when firefighters saw big flames on a deep property that also held trailers and sheds.

One resident said he was charging a battery in the garage when he heard an explosion.  Suddenly flames started spreading from the garage.  There is also a house on the property that appears not to have been impacted.

Hazardous incident crews were called in because chemicals were in the garage and on the property.  Those crews tried to stop run off from the chemicals.  Firefighters say several people were displaced.
