San Jose Loses Falcon Chick in Weekend Fall

Fans of the beloved falcon family that lives on a ledge at San Jose City Hall learned one of the family's newest little ones died over the weekend.

The only daughter of celebrity falcons Clara and Esteban Colbert, named Unita, was lunging for a meal slipped and crashed into the City Hall rotunda.

Glenn Stewart, a biologist with the UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group, told the Mercury News that the bird couldn't handle flying and grabbing for the food at the same time.

Unita was the only female among four recently hatched falcon chicks.  She was only 40 days old.

This is Clara's fifth nesting season at City Hall and her third with mate Esteban Colbert.

The FalconCam, a live streaming video of the falcons' nest, can be  viewed on the city's website at http://www.sanjoseca.gov.
