San Jose Marine Corporal Killed in Afghanistan

A Marine from San Jose was killed while fighting in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said Thursday.

Marine Corporal Kevin Cueto, 23, was killed June 22 by an IED blast in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan, according to the DOD.

Cueto, who enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005, was on his second combat deployment. He served in Iraq in 2009.

Among his military citations are a Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Cueto was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.

Cueto is the second Bay Area service member killed in combat iin less than a week. Army Spc. Nathan Cox, of Fremont, was killed June 16 in Afghanistan. Cox was a medic.
