San Jose Police Chiefs Pay San Francisco 49ers for Free Tickets After Gifts Spark Complaints

Top San Jose Police Department officials have paid the San Francisco 49ers for free preseason tickers after the gifts sparked anonymous complaints to the city's independent police monitor.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that Chief Larry Esquivel and Assistant Chief Eddie Garcia received the tickets last year as part of the team's annual law enforcement appreciation day.

But the free passes came under scrutiny after it became known that an off-duty sergeant who provides freelance security for the 49ers was at defensive lineman Ray McDonald's house when the player was arrested for alleged domestic violence. Prosecutors decided last week not to charge McDonald.

City spokesman David Vossbrink tells the Mercury News the chiefs made a mistake in taking the tickets because employees are not allowed to accept tickets to sporting events or any gifts worth more than $50.
