San Jose Police Co-Sponsors Educational Forum on Identity Theft

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the U.S., and anyone can be a victim of it.

The San Jose Police Dept. co-sponsored an identity theft educational forum Saturday.

It addressed ways to prevent identity theft and recover from it if you become a victim.

Organizers said it is getting easier to become a victim.

"There is a lot of information out there with all the social media that we have, with all the debit cards and the mail that you get through the postal service," San Jose police spokesman David Honda said. "All that is just information that is floating out there."

People can make themselves a harder target for identity theft.

Some suggestions include:

  • Choose good, strong passwords online.
  • Check for security symbols when shopping online
  • Don't answer unsolicited or unwanted e-mails.
