San Jose Police Investigate Fatal Hit and Run

San Jose police on Wednesday were searching for the driver of a fatal hit-and-run accident that left a man dead in the eastern part of the city.

It was dark and raining when the man was struck at Alum Rock and Jackson avenues near Story Road just after 6 a.m., police said, adding that it appears as though he was at least 75 feet outside of the crosswalk.

Officer Albert Morales said the man was declared dead at the scene. He is the 25th pedestrian fatality citywide in 2012.

Police were able to get a brief description of the vehicle: a dark car sedan-type vehicle that was seen heading west on Alum Rock before it took off. The man was then hit by a second vehicle - a minivan - whose driver stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police.

Rita Mora of the nearly Eastside Neighborhood Center told NBC Bay Area that this area has long been considered dangerous, especially for older people who need more time to cross the streets.
