A 17-year-old girl was shot while trying to retrieve her stolen car late Monday in San Jose, police said.

The shooting was reported after 7 p.m. when a male suspect jumped into the teen's car in the Almaden Lake Park area and drove off, police said.

The girl, who had left her vehicle's engine running, was in her friend's car during the incident. The group then chased after the suspect, police said.

The group was able to catch up with the suspect at the intersection of Coleman Avenue and Winfield Boulevard. Police said the teen girl then got out of her friend's vehicle and told the suspect to get out of her car.

The suspect then shot at the teen, grazing her in the neck area, according to police. The girl was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

The teen's car was found dumped about a half-mile away from where the shooting occurred, police said. Officers late Monday were still searching for the shooter.

Police sources initially told NBC Bay Area the teen was critically injured during a carjacking in San Jose.
