San Jose Police Say Shooting Deaths of 2 Men Was a Murder-Suicide

The shooting deaths of two men whose bodies were discovered Monday in a South San Jose townhouse was likely a murder-suicide, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

"We're investigating it as a murder-suicide," San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said.

Police are not yet ready to release the names of the victims or what they believe was the motive for the fatal shootings, Morales said.

Someone called police at 3:28 p.m. Monday to report finding the two dead men in the home in the 1500 block of Marlene Way near Cherry Avenue and Almaden Expressway, Morales said.

A woman who lives across the street from the home, Christine Moreland, said that on Monday afternoon, two women who arrived at the home started screaming after locating the bodies inside.

Her husband, Anthony Powell, went over, entered the residence where the bodies were and then told the two women to call 911, Moreland said.

"They (the women) were on the phone, screaming," Moreland said.

On Sunday, Moreland said she "heard a bang, bang, bang" followed by what sounded "like a guy screaming."

All of the neighbors came out of their homes and decided that "everyone was OK," and went back in without calling police. "We thought maybe it was some fireworks," she said.

Another neighbor, Arooj Syed, 43, said she heard two sets of shots on Sunday, one set at about 6 p.m. and another between 8 and 9 p.m., but people who came out thought it might be fireworks.

Police have not confirmed the estimated time that the two men had been shot.
