San Jose Residents Fear Property Crimes Will Increase Insurance Rates

New police numbers show property crimes in San Jose are near a 10-year high despite seeing a slight drop in the last few months.

Last year there were 27,000 property crimes reported in San Jose, according to police. Property crimes include burglaries and car thefts.

Police records show the net financial loss to victims for those crimes in 2013 is more than $76 million.

"We understand the police coverage problems," said Al Shultz, who recently reported a package stolen from his porch. "For them, this is small potatoes. For us, this is not small potatoes."

Many victims said they fear their insurance premiums may rise with all the property crimes in San Jose.

Tom Mean, a San Jose State University professor, points to economics.

"So in the aggregate, if there's a structural increase in the types of crimes, their insurance rates will go up," Mean said. "For any particular company, rates will go up, some down. But in the aggregate, rates have to go up."
