With the San Jose Sharks about to make another playoff run, the team is inviting fans to join them in growing beards for charity, team officials said.

The team will be participating in the National Hockey League tradition of letting their beards grow through the duration of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The team has clinched a playoff berth with a 79-49 record as of Wednesday afternoon. The Sharks are scheduled to take on the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night.

Fans can join in the beard growing and pledge their playoff beard through the team's Beard-a-thon to raise money for charity, team officials said.

Participating fans are asked to document the progress of their beard on the team's website and social media.

Sharks fans unwilling or unable to grow playoff beards can pledge a beard grower.

The Beard-a-thon has raised $2.5 million for charity since the program was launched in 2009, team officials said.

Donations go to benefit the Sharks Foundation, which distributes funds to programs in Santa Clara County including schools, hospitals, arts groups and research foundations.
