San Jose State Pledges to Improve Race Relations

Better training, "culturally-themed" floors in the dorms are coming.

San Jose State promises that conditions will get better for racial minorities on campus.

The school's president and top brass have unveiled a plan to improve race relations on the campus, a year after a black freshman was racially taunted by roommates who also hung a Confederate flag in their dorm room, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

To avoid a repeat of that incident, which led to hate crime charges against the alleged perpetrators and also compelled victim Donald Williams, Jr. to file a $5 million claim against the school, the school will start "culturally themed residence hall floors" and "more training for new students and advisors," the newspaper reported.

The school has also pledged to conduct "research on successful black, Latino" and other minority students to discover how they best succeed, the newspaper reported.
