A San Jose woman was taken into custody on Wednesday on suspicion of mowing down a friend in Campbell and killing her, according to police.

Campbell police responded to a report of an accident involving a car and a pedestrian around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday. Another person called 911 to report a disturbance at the same spot, police said.

Responding officers found a severely wounded 23-year-old woman lying on the road near the intersection of Montemar Way and Leigh Avenue. The victim was taken to Valley Medical Center where she died, police said.

Witnesses told police that they saw a woman fleeing the scene behind the wheel of a gray four-door car.

The suspect, identified as Elsie De La Rosa, also 23, knew the victim, police said. The pair traveled to the Campbell neighborhood in the same car and got into a fight, but were not connected to that area, police said.

De La Rosa was arrested near MacArthur Avenue and Pfeffer Lane around 11:50 a.m. Wednesday in the same car that police believe she used to run over the victim. She has been booked into the Elmwood Correctional Facility for murder and felony hit-and-run, and is being held without bail. She is expected to be in court on Friday.

This marks Campbell's first murder in two years, police said.

People with information about the crash are asked to call the Campbell police's Investigations Unit at 408-871-5190. Tips can also be submitted through the police department's mobile app.
