San Mateo police shot a man after he opened fire on officers in  the 1500 block of Oak Street Monday morning, a police sergeant said.

No officers were hurt in the shooting that happened between 10:30 and 11 a.m., police said.

Police did not immediately release details on the suspect, but a coroner's van was on the scene following the shooting.

Jack Horgan, 90, who lives in the block where the shooting happened, said he was surprised to find police outside of his home this morning. Horgan, who said he lives next door to the man who was shot, described him as someone with "mental problems," but no apparent disability that would impair him from performing normal activities.
