San Mateo Vying for Food Title in “Best Small Town” Competition

The Bay Area may soon have a winner in town.

The city of San Mateo is in the running to claim the title of “Best Food” in the 2013 Rand McNally “Best Small Town” Competition.

The competition, which scouts out towns across the U.S. with less than 150,000 people, names winners in six different categories: Most Beautiful, Most Fun, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Best Food and Best for Geocaching.

“San Mateo has so many strengths, and one of them is food,” said the city’s Economic Development manager Marcus Clarke. “We have a high quality and diverse selection of grocery stores, restaurants and specialty food stores. The Rand McNally competition will promote our local food mecca on a broad scale and can help to draw tourists and visitors looking for new culinary experiences.”

Winners will be determined through the amount of votes received on www.bestoftheroad.com, the town’s social media participation, overall fit and suitability of the town in its specific category and a video or photo tour of the town with a written statement to be submitted by the 30 town finalists – 5 in each category.

Town finalists will be announced in mid-September and winners will be announced October 7. Winning towns will be featured in the 2015 Rand McNally Road Atlas and will receive a custom iPhone app and online travel guide that will promote it as a top destination.

San Mateo is the only Bay Area city currently competing in the food category and holds the second highest amount of votes as of Monday.
