Captain Kevin Jensen announced Tuesday that he will run against his boss, Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith in 2014.
Santa Clara County Sheriff's Captain Kevin Jensen officially announced he's running against his boss, Sheriff Laurie Smith in the June 2014 election.
Kevin Jensen is a 28-year veteran of the department who has been a member of the county’s emergency response team and SWAT. Smith has been sheriff since 1998. According to her campaign website, Sheriff Smith has received “numerous public service awards” and points out that she has been recognized for “an outstanding record in the California law enforcement community.”
In July, NBC Bay Area reported that members of the Deputy Sheriffs' Association of Santa Clara County and the Santa Clara County Correctional Peace Officers' Association both voted overwhelmingly to endorse Jensen in 2014.
At his campaign function, Jensen continued to press the issue, “I truly believe that our department is made of fine men and women and administrators, (it) has a lot of room to grow. There are things that need to change,” he said.
NBC Bay Area reached out to Sheriff Smith prior to Jensen’s announcement. She has not yet responded to our request for comment regarding her captain’s candidacy.
