Highway 87 Grabs Santa Clara County's Worst Commute Times

Highway 87 tops the Valley Transportation Authority's annual report of worst commute times in Santa Clara County.

Specifically, the nine miles of Highway 87 between Almaden Valley and the northern end of San Jose takes the prize for most congestion, crawling along at speeds of below 35 miles per hour for more than three-fourths of the time during the morning and afternoon commutes.

Interstate 880 is right behind 87, with similar congestion.

Mercury News reported that solo drivers often try to cheat their way through traffic on 87 by illegally using carpool lanes. And lawful carpooling would be an easy solution to alleviating traffic.

"Studies have shown that if a shift as low as 8 percent away from solo commuting could be realized, much of the existing congestion could be relieved," VTA spokeswoman Brandi Childress told the publication. "If everyone in Santa Clara County committed to taking transit or telecommuting only two days a month -- TWO DAYS A MONTH-- we would realize this relief."
