Santa Clara Valley Water District Says Chesbro Reservoir Close to Minimum Water Level

Santa Clara Valley Water District officials said the Chesbro reservoir is in danger of drying up due to California's severe drought.

Water levels at the reservoir, which sits near Santa Teresa Boulevard between San Jose and Morgan Hill, have now dropped too low for the district's measuring gauge.

Chesbro reservoir can hold 7,945 acre feet of water. District water officials estimate the reservoir at about 90 acre feet of water. One acre foot of water can supply two families of five for a  year, according to the water district.

Officials said they expect the reservoir to get below minimum water levels within a week, which could mean fish in the connecting creeks will die, some water wells will dry up and it will put up a strain on the aquifer.

The water district said nearby Uvas reservoir, which is at less than 5 percent capacity, is almost in the same situation.
