Gas Leak in San Francisco Capped

The break happened at the intersection of 4th and Folsom

A gas leak in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood has been capped according to a tweet from the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management.

The leak prompted several homes and businesses to be evacuated, a fire department dispatcher said.

The leak was reported near Fourth and Folsom streets at about 12:10 p.m., PG&E spokesman J.D. Guidi said.

A construction crew apparently struck a six-inch gas main in the area, Guidi said.

Utility crews were called in by the fire department at about 12:30 p.m. and were responding to the emergency, he said.

The fire department was working to evacuate the area within a couple of blocks, a dispatcher said.

No injuries were reported, and it was not immediately clear how many people or buildings had to be evacuated, the dispatcher said.

As of 1:15 p.m. the gas was still leaking and crews had no estimate as to when it would be capped, Guidi sad.

Traffic in the area hias been disrupted and motorists were advised to avoid the area.
