Sharks Win, Move on to Western Conference Final

Get ready to see a lot of teal in the South Bay.

The San Jose Sharks are moving on toward the Stanley Cup after taking care of the Detroit Red Wings in Game 5 of the second-round series.

They did it in front what many say was the loudest crowd ever at the HP Pavilion. The Sharks have had the second-best record in the NHL the past five seasons, but hadn't made it this far in the playoffs until Saturday night.

San Jose beat Detroit 2-1 and took the series 4-1.

The team now moves on to the Western Conference Finals.

Before the game Coach Todd McLellan told the team they needed to put the blowout loss in Game 4 behind them quickly before it snowballed into an even bigger problem.  And that is just what they did.

The first goal came courtesy Joe Thornton.

Patrick Marleau scored the tiebreaker 6:59 into the third period.  That is all it took to win.

Marleau and goalie Evgeni Nabokov are the only two players remaining from the 2004 team that lost to Calgary in six games, and both came up big in the series clincher against their nemesis, the Red Wings.

Tickets for the next round go on sale Tuesday.

They will play either Chicago or Vancouver.
